Dear Families of West Ottawa,
Last week we finished up our unit on two-point perspective. Students were to take home their city drawings to finish over the weekend if they were not done. Late work will still be accepted. However, students are encouraged to turn their drawings in no later than Friday, February 28. Mid-term progress reports will be coming home soon. Students can pull up their grades by turning in missing work. On Monday, February 24, 8th graders were introduced to Oaxacan sculptures that originate out of Mexico. The art from Arrazola, Mexico is known for its bright colors and variety of patterns. These sculptures will serve as inspiration for students’ clay projects. Students will use the three hand-building techniques, pinch, coil, and slab to create a vessel that resembles a creature. This project will take about three weeks from start to finish. On the first day of the semester, students were given a syllabus that outlines the 8th grade art course. 8th graders were to bring it home, discuss it with their parents, and bring it back signed by their parent. Students were given a week to turn in this assignment. I will still accept it but points will be deducted for each day that it is late. In 8th grade art, we started the semester by reviewing pattern as well as primary and secondary colors. We discussed how our patterns were repetitious as well the fact that each person used a variety of patterns in their artwork. Students were given a little bit of time to finish their pattern designs in class on Tuesday. However, whatever is not finished is homework and is due on Friday, February 7. Our next unit is a two-point perspective city drawing. Students learned how to draw in one-point perspective in 7th grade art so we are building on what they are learned last year as well as introducing new techniques.
