Dear West Ottawa Families,
In 8th grade, students are working on a city drawing in 2-point perspective. This project builds upon what student learned last year about 1-point perspective in 7th grade art. We have looked at A Rainy Day by French artist, Gustave Caillebotte. This painting can be found in at the Art Institute of Chicago and measures 83 ½ by 108-3/4 inches which is approximately 7 ft by 9 ft. In addition to artwork, as a class we looked at different types of cities and talked about how we often make judgments based on visual appearance. We then discussed instances in which it is good or bad to make a judgment based on appearance. Students are encouraged to think about the architectural details they will incorporate into their city drawings and what kind of impression they are trying to convey. We hope to finish this unit within the next week and a half. I would like to send the Oaxacan wood sculptures home before Thanksgiving break. I know that for students riding a bus, sending a 3-dimensional art project home can be a little dicey. Therefore, if you or your child is worried about it getting broken, if possible, you may want to make arrangements to pick him or her up from school one day. Artfully, Rebecca Morrissey |
