Over the past few weeks, 8th graders explored their identities through the collage process. Students were asked to think about what shapes or influences who they are today. In class, we talked about how people's identities are often rooted in their interests, the influence people have on them, their beliefs, their personalities, their physical characteristics, and the culture they are raised in. Each student had their silhouette traced and were asked to find images that related to their identity to fill it. The background of the artwork was made up of words that related to each individual person. The color of the images contrasted nicely with the black and white text in the background. If students did not finish their collage projects on Friday, December 5, they were asked to take them home to complete for homework. All identity collages are due no later than Wednesday, December 10. This week, 8th graders looked at Oaxacan wood sculptures that originated out of Arrazola, Mexico. Sculptures from this area are known for their bright colors and patterns. Students will be creating their own Oaxacan inspired vessels out of clay this week and into next week. Students will be using the three handbuilding techniques of pinch, slab, and coil to construct their creature vessels. This clay project is a student favorite.
With the end of the semester fast approaching, I want to remind both students and parents that there is an 8th grade art exam. This exam will cover material from throughout the semester. There will be an in class review a a day or two before the exam. As a reminder...... If students earn an 85% or better in 8th grade art throughout the semester, 8th grade art fulfills the per-requisite art class, Introduction to Art, at the high school. Earning an 85% or better in 8th grade art will allow students to take more advanced art classes upon entering high school if they choose to do so. |
