Dear West Ottawa Families,
Students have been working on still-life drawings over the last two weeks. Wednesday is the last day to work on them in class. Whatever is not done will be homework. Students can find images of the still-life on the website to help them finish the shading of their objects. There is also a grading rubric available so students can evaluate themselves on their drawings based on the criteria we talked about in class. Drawings should be turned in by Friday, October 18. Parent-Teacher Conferences will be starting next week. Because I teach at both Macatawa Bay and Harbor Lights, I will be splitting my time as follows: Thursday, Oct.24--HL Tuesday, Oct. 29--MB Thursday, Oct. 31 Morning-MB Thursday, Oct. 31 Afternoon-HL Please feel free to visit me at either location. I look forward to meeting you! Artfully, Rebecca Morrissey Dear Families of West Ottawa,
In 7th grade art, we started the semester by reviewing patterns. We discussed how our patterns were repetitious as well the fact that each person used a variety of patterns in their artwork. After patterns, we moved onto a color collage. We looked at artwork by Goerges Seurat as well as past Grand Rapids Artprize participants. We talked about how small amounts of color placed close to each other and in a formation creates a picture. We discussed how this idea was first used by Georges Seurat and his Pointilist painting and today is used in the pixilation of digital images. After this discussion, students were given the task of sketching out an image onto their paper and then looking through magazines to find the colors they needed to create their image. 7th graders then cut the colored papers they found into pieces no larger than their thumb and glued these pieces onto their papers. This collage process was different from many of the students’ previous experiences of collage because it required students to look only for colors and not images. Therefore, utilizing the concept of pixels. 7th graders are currently working on still-life value drawings in which they are learning to use a view-finder and increase their observational skills. Students are also learning that tone gradation is key to making an object look 3-Dimensional on a 2-Dimensional paper. We hope to finish these drawings toward the middle of next week. Parents, please make sure you are checking your child’s grade on parent portal. Mid-term progress reports will be going home next week but now is the time for students to get caught up on any missing work they may have.
