Dear Mac Bay Families,
7th graders have been learning about value the last few weeks. They started out learning how to draw and shade various forms such as a sphere, cube, and cylinder. Next, students built a word sculpture using paper strips. Photographs were then taken of the sculptures and students used a grid drawing technique to draw the contours of each letter. Once their contour drawings were complete, students used drawing pencils and shading sticks to add value and contrast to their word drawings. If students were not finished with their drawings on Monday, they were assigned as homework and are due tomorrow, Friday, May 20. This week 7th graders started learning about printmaking. Students learned about the different printmaking tools and were then quizzed on their knowledge. Students will begin transferring their designs to a linoleum block and learning how to carve it so it will be like a stamp that can be inked and printed. As of May 20, West Ottawa Public Schools will have a new phone system. If you need to reach me, please call 616-786-2000 and my extension is x4432 or x4430. If you have any questions or concerns, you can also reach me at [email protected]. Sincerely, Mrs. Morrissey Dear Mac Bay Families,
7th graders have been working on radial design color scheme paintings. Students learned about color schemes and then chose one to paint their unique radial design. We will be finishing these up this week. If students are feeling behind, they may stay after school until 3:30 on Wednesday, April 20 to catch up on their paintings. Paint cannot be transported home easily so please talk to your child and encourage them to stay after school on Wednesday if he or she is behind on his or her project. Sincerely, Mrs. Morrissey Dear Mac Bay Families,

7th graders started the semester creating a pattern design that incorporated a variety of patterns as well as their names. Students learned how to create contrast in their drawings by shading in certain areas and leaving others white to make their design stand out and create emphasis. After pattern, we moved onto 1-point aerial perspective. Students have been creating a city from a bird’s eye view by learning about the rules of perspective and how they can help an artist create depth in a drawing. As part of this project, students are creating problems in their cities and learning how to draw a superhero in correct human proportion to save their cities from disaster. Students will also be writing a letter to the mayor of their city to try and convince the mayor to choose their superhero to protect the city. Throughout this unit on aerial perspective, we have made many connections with common core classes. We tied to the math curriculum when making our windows and learned that they all needed to be parallel with one another. We will also connect with the language arts classes when we write our letters and review the components of formal letter writing: introductory paragraphs, transitions, and concluding remarks. Please check Infinite Campus for your child's most current grade. If your child has any missing work, please encourage him or her to get it turned in as soon as possible. Artfully, Mrs. Morrissey Dear Mac Bay Families,
This week in art, we are wrapping up our unit on Still- Life drawing and beginning a Printmaking Unit. Tuesday was the last day to work on still-life drawings in class. Students who did not finish their still-life drawings in class, were asked to bring them home to complete. Pictures of the Still-life as well as the grading rubric can be found on the class weebly site here: http://womiddleart.weebly.com/still-life-images1.html Students can use the resources on the weebly site to help them finish their drawings. Drawings are due no later than Friday, January 8. Today students began searching for an image that they want to use for their linoleum block prints. We will finish the week by transferring our images to our blocks and then begin carving them. Next week, students will learn how to print their designs. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me at [email protected]. Artfully, Mrs. Morrissey |
