It has been an exciting month in the art room! Over the past month, students have received awards in two different art shows:
the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards as well as the Michigan Art Education Association - Region 9 Show Below are details about each art show. Dear Families of West Ottawa,
In 7th grade art, we started the semester by reviewing patterns. We discussed how our patterns were repetitious as well the fact that each person used a variety of patterns in their artwork. Students then made connections between their artwork and Macatawa Bay by focusing on things that we have a variety of at school as well as things that are repetitious just like their artwork. Last week, Wednesday, we started learning about 1 point aerial perspective in which students will create a city from a bird’s eye view. Students will learn about the rules of perspective and how they can help an artist create depth in a drawing. I am looking forward to an exciting semester with your children! If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me at [email protected] Artfully, Mrs. Morrissey Tomorrow, Tuesday Decemeber 16, 7th graders will be taking a printmaking quiz. Students must pass the quiz with a 70% or better in order to begin carving with the tools. Many students were absent today so in effort to keep students caught up, a review sheet is attached below. If possible, please have your child study tonight so they can take the quiz upon their return.
In 7th grade art, students have been learning how to draw realistically through observational drawing. A still-life of various objects was set-up in the middle of the room and each student had a slightly different perspective of the objects. Students learned how to use a viewfinder to help them narrow their focus and transfer what they were seeing onto their paper in the right proportion and placement. After sketching in their objects, students began adding value to make their drawings appear more realistic. Thursday, December 11 will be the last day to work on these drawings in class. If students need to take their drawings home to complete, they are due no later than Monday, December 15. Pictures will be posted on the class website by the end of the week for students to reference at home if they need to finish their shading.
Next week, we will begin a new unit on printmaking. Students will learn how to carve a design out of linoleum and then print it. There will be a safety quiz on Tuesday, December 16. Review for the quiz will take place on Monday, the day before the quiz. Students must pass the quiz with a 70% or better in order to begin carving with the tools. Dear West Ottawa Families,
7th graders have been working on radial design color scheme paintings. Students learned about color schemes and then chose one to paint their unique radial design. The last day to work on these painting in class, was Friday, November 7. If students would like to stay after school on Tuesday, November 11, the art room will be open until 4 pm for students to work. The color scheme paintings will be accepted through Wednesday, November 12, without a late penalty. I would like to invite you to Fall Conferences. Please stop by to see some of the projects your children have been working on and hear about their progress in art class! I look forward to seeing you! Artfully, Mrs. Morrissey Catch-up Day Students may come in during lunch or after school on Wednesday, October 21 to work on missing work or any artwork they are behind on in art class. This week 7th graders are learning about printmaking using linoleum block. Last week students learned about the tools used in printmaking and how to use them safely. This week students are applying their knowledge through carving their own linoleum block and eventually will apply ink to create their own prints! This project is a favorite among the students and it will be exciting to see their designs come to fruition. Please remind your child to turn in his or her still-life drawing if he or she has not done so yet.
